Meta Sarmiento

Meta Sarmiento is a Filipino rapper and poet from Guam now living in Denver, CO. He is a finalist for the 2019 Sonia Sanchez-Langston Hughes Poetry Contest; winner of the 2019 YTP Hawaii School Tour Rap Challenge; Top 12 Finisher at 2018 WRLD UNDERGROUND MC TOURNAMENT; a TEDx Speaker; a 2017 National Poetry Slam semifinalist with Slam Nuba; and a winner of the 2015 Spoken Word for the World contest in which he was flown to Paris, France to perform during the United Nations Climate Negotiations.

Meta and his work have been featured by TEDx, Denver Westword, NBC NEWS, Asian Avenue Magazine, Colorado Public Radio, Aspen Words, Guam Daily Post, Button Poetry, Rap Direct, and Word is Bond Magazine.

His latest book of poems, Tie Your Shoes Kid, was inspired by his nieces and nephews. It chronicles the journey from childhood to the doorstep of adulthood. Each poem is a snapshot of family, identity, love, loss, and healing through the lens of an Asian kid from the Pacific.
